Dune by Frank Herbert

Far in the future, two powerful families are locked in a bitter feud. The Duke of Atreides has been outmanoeuvered by his arch-enemy, Baron Harkonnen, and must move from his home to take up the administration of the planet Arrakis, sometimes known as Dune, a vast desert where every drop of water is worth a fortune. But Dune is also a planet of fabulous wealth, for it is the only source of a drug prized throughout the Galactic Empire.

I have heard much from my dear friend, Roberta, how delightfully complex the Universe becomes in Frank Herbert's depictions. I have listened to Dune a couple of times now on Audiobook (CDs, courtesy of Spokane County Library) and am attempting to sift through the pages of a hard copy in the vain attempt to actually grasp the delicate, vile, brutal, and passionate webbings cast in this quite substantial novel. It leaves me breathless at times, confused at others, and mostly just flummoxed while I attempt to grasp the melodic straws that are Dune.

Thanks, Roberta! I am hopeful to understand it half as well as you... some day.
